Last month, insiders at FCA divulged that Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos would soon join Alfa Romeo (a move as yet unconfirmed by Stellantis communications). Now Stellantis has confirmed that Fran\u00e7ois Leboine, formerly Renault\u2019s Head of Concept Cars, has left to lead both the Fiat and Abarth brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move is the latest in a series of shake-ups that have taken place in Italy, where Plou\u00e9 (recently also named as Head of Design for Lancia brand and LCV models) has made significant changes. Appointing a Frenchman to lead a historically Italian brand is not without precedent, but it has deeper implications. Leboine has effectively joined a segment rival after more than 20 years at Renault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cardesignaward.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Renault-5-Prototype.jpg?w=1410\" alt=\"Renault 5 Prototype\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cardesignaward.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Renault-5-Prototype.jpg?w=1410\" alt=\"Renault 5 Prototype\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Renault 5 Prototype sketch by Francois Leboine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The fruit of Leboine\u2019s direction was most recently presented in the form of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formtrends.com\/renault-5-prototype\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Renault 5 Prototype<\/a>, which reimagines the iconic city car as a more muscular electric vehicle. We\u2019re told it will soon reach production with minor revisions. But before taking over from St\u00e9phane Janin \u2013 a designer he studied with at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ensaama.net\/site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ensaama<\/a> (\u00e9cole nationale sup\u00e9rieure des arts appliqu\u00e9s et des m\u00e9tiers d\u2019art) school in Paris \u2013 and leading the concept car division at Renault, Leboine led a somewhat quieter life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in Normandy, Leboine <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/?p=14641\" target=\"_blank\">admits<\/a> he was a very good student who never drew cars in the margins of his notebooks. Though his parents \u2013 both teachers \u2013 nurtured his creativity, the school&#8217;s personnel, recognizing his academic potential, pushed him to focus on his studies. Instead, he drew on the weekends and evenings. He landed a job at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mbd-technologies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MBD Design<\/a> upon graduation and worked there for three years before attending the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formtrends.com\/?s=Royal+College+of+Art\" target=\"_blank\">Royal College of Art<\/a>. His second year at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rca.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">the RCA<\/a> was sponsored by Renault and he joined the company in 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.pinimg.com\/originals\/55\/4b\/11\/554b119062a714923e942c6ad9426c03.jpg?w=1410&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.pinimg.com\/originals\/55\/4b\/11\/554b119062a714923e942c6ad9426c03.jpg?w=1410&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>A young Francois Leboine poses with then Head of Concept Cars Axel Breun in front of sketches of the Initiale Paris concept (2013)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Leboine has worked for Renault Design\u2019s studios in Guyancourt, Bastille and Barcelona and for Patrick Le Qu\u00e9ment, Anne Ascensio, Fabio Filippini, Axel Breun and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formtrends.com\/renault-trezor-concept-video-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Laurens van den Acker<\/a> over the course of his career. He worked on projects such as the Megane II (which was strongly influenced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formtrends.com\/renault-avantime-clearly-before-its-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Avantime<\/a>), the Twingo II, the Twizy, and the Espace 5 before leading the designs of the current Clio, Captur and Dacia Sandero as Renault\u2019s Exterior Design Studio Chief. Ultimately, he succeeded Janin as Head of Concept Cars in 2018, and led the design of 2020 Megane eVision Concept as well as the brilliant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formtrends.com\/renault-morphoz-concept\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shape-shifting Morphoz concept<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/C77uz39XgAAYphG.jpg:large\" alt=\"\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/C77uz39XgAAYphG.jpg:large\" alt=\"\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Fran\u00e7ois Leboine (left) explaining Espace inspiration to Kevin Spacey at Renault&#8217;s design studio  (March , 2017)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.media.stellantis.com\/uk-en\/fiat\/press\/franois-leboine-is-appointed-fiat-and-abarth-head-of-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stellantis press release<\/a> issued cites Leboine\u2019s \u2018strategic vision\u2019 as a \u2018key asset\u2019 to lead the Fiat and Abarth transformation into the future, noting that Jean-Pierre Plou\u00e9 is \u201cglad to welcome a talented designer with recognized professional skills [to the team].
