Behind the wheel of BMW’s masterful piece of design and technology<\/strong><\/p>\n

There has been quite a prelude to this day. The i8 is BMW\u2019s first plug-in hybrid performance car and expectations are running high. The initial Vision EfficientDynamics study caused such a visceral reaction when revealed almost five years ago. The design was fresh; it challenged the conventional vernacular and introduced non-automotive materials and applications. With its overlapping and interlocking surfaces, and aerodynamic flourishes, the production car we\u2019re about to drive retains much of the drama, enough to command attention anyway and certainly be noticed on the road.<\/p>\n

Much of the exterior design has been governed by aerodynamics. Beno\u00eet Jacob, head of BMW i design, explains that he encouraged the team to study gliders and sailing boats \u2013 \u2018objects that move with natural energy\u2019. The car is, he says, \u2018designed by the wind not the team; it is dictated by nature\u2019. And there are certainly some intriguing features to keep us amused, such as the sight of the rear fender on the wheel arch from the wing mirrors as we drive. The LED lights at the front and back are slender and sculptural \u2013 more like on a show car than a production model. The exterior looks and feels beautifully executed.<\/p>\n

The scissor doors that open playfully forwards and upwards, coupled with the raised door sills, can make gracefully entering the i8 a bit of a challenge. Once inside though, we are cocooned in a spacious, delicate cabin that continues the layered exterior theme. Here the team have excelled at translating the feeling of lightness to the interior environment. The notes are almost perfect.<\/p>\n

In BMW fashion, the cockpit tilts towards the driver, for a sportier and more controlled driving position. Occupants \u2013 possibly two as the rear seats are far too small to be used much – sit pretty low in the narrow lightweight seats. There are no gimmicky gadgets on-board. Instead the digital instrument panel exposes two large simple displays, and all other functions are controlled via the iDrive in the center console.<\/p>\n

All three trim levels \u2013 Neso as standard and Carpo and Halo as optional – employ naturally treated leather with subtle contrast stitching. The material covers the seats, extending to parts of the center console, the overlapping instrument panel and interior door panels. The touch, feel and smell are at once premium. Apart from the sensation of lightness, there is little indication that you are driving an eco car. On all models elements of the carbon-fiber passenger cell are exposed as you enter and exit as a reminder of the advanced engineering that lies beneath.<\/p>\n

Once snugly positioned behind the compact steering wheel, it is up to us in what mode to drive the i8: in full electric in busy urban traffic, utilizing the powerful combustion engine on the open road, or to let the on-board computer decide. In practice the shift is seamless. Handling is agile and steering is precise, and the six-speed coupled to the petrol engine shifts as smoothly as you would expect on any automatic BMW car.<\/p>\n

The Start button takes the car into its default Comfort mode and if the battery is charged, you will drive under electric power. As you click into Sport mode, the instrument panel transforms from soft blue to hot red, the steering and the suspension firm up and the engine note bursts alive. The car isn\u2019t silent in Comfort or Eco modes; BMW has had to add a subtle artificial automotive sound to alert other road users and distract occupants from road noise, but there is a distinct change of acoustics as the i8 powers up. It feels quite thrilling.<\/p>\n

Driving for almost the entire day on the open roads in the Scottish Highlands we are surprised by how easy it is to control the i8. Performance cars like this can take a lot out of the driver, yet the i8 keeps us calm throughout the day.<\/p>\n

Even in Sport mode, the interior environment takes the element of aggression out. This isn\u2019t by chance \u2013 Jacob is very much aware of the importance of directing driver behavior with the BMW i cars. Much like how an architect considers the behavior of occupants, he feels with the eco cars there is scope to expand the notion of sustainability beyond the ecological and economical.<\/p>\n

Jacob tells me his role has evolved from being a straightforward vehicle designer to \u2018designing the behavior of the people driving these cars\u2019. He says: \u2018The i8 delivers a lot with very little emissions, but with great if not better emotion.\u2019 And driving the i8 in the Highlands, enjoying the serene cabin, at times almost drifting in near silence, we are caressed to be more aware and responsive to our environment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
